Hitotsubashi University, a national university in Tokyo that boasts the best social science research and education in Japan, established the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) in 2014 as an interdepartmental research organization directly under the President. HIAS aims to be (1) a hub for international joint research that brings together researchers from inside and outside the University, as well as (2) a center for interdisciplinary research that addresses social issues. Since its establishment in 2014, HIAS has engaged in various international research projects and has seen many first-rate academic achievements. Building on these accomplishments, HIAS is now launching a new project, “HIAS BRIDGES,” with the aim of enriching the academic community by extending its capacity as a research hub and supporting young researchers. As a part of this project, we are seeking next-generation young scholars to join HIAS as an “Assistant Professor or Research Associate with a full-time research commitment for five years.” Successful candidates will be expected to engage in cutting-edge research in our focus research fields, such as Economics or Business, at HIAS.

International Relations and Politics
Job Description:
Applicants will be expected to;
1: Engage in research in the field of International Relations and Politics.Expertise either in the relationship between technology and governance, U.S. foreign and security policy, including U.S.-Japan relations, or international security, including arms control and conflict resolution, would be preferred, but other expertise shall be considered based on merit.
2: Plan and manage international research projects at the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study, possibly in cooperation with faculty members of the Graduate Schools of Law, Social Science, and Social Data Science.
3: Teach lectures in English for 4 credits/year* (or, approximately a 105-minute lecture per week/year) at undergraduate and graduate levels.
4: Possibly be engaged in the minimum level of administrative duties.

1: A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in International Relations or a relevant academic field.

Legal Innovation
Job Description：
Applicants will be expected to;
1: Engage in research in Legal Innovation.
Legal Innovation research includes, for example,
(1) Law & Policy study related to Data, AI, and other digital technologies,
or (2) research on social, economic, and theoretical impacts and implications of the introduction of AI into Legal Systems.
For the latter, researchers in computer science, and in particular machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and computational linguistics, as well as those with a background in legal studies, are welcome.
Researchers are also welcome to accelerate and develop discussion to identify and address the legal and ethical risks associated with algorithmic judicial decisions.
2: Contribute to research activities of the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study and the Graduate School of Law by actively participating in seminars, research collaborations, etc.
3: Teach lectures of 4 credits/year (Equivalent to one class session per week)*

The Position
- There are a) Full-time Assistant Professor / Research Associate（non-tenure / five-year fixed term）and b) Full-time Specially Appointed Assistant Professor / Specially Appointed Research Associate (non-tenure / five-year fixed term）as opening positions. Is the Assistant Professor position the same as the Research Associate position? Are there two positions or four positions advertised? Also, can the applicants decide whether to apply for an Assistant Professor or Research Associate?
There are two types of open positions, not four; a) Full-time Assistant Professor / Research Associate（non-tenure / five-year fixed term）, b) Full-time Specially Appointed Assistant Professor / Specially Appointed Research Associate (non-tenure / five-year fixed term. The assistant professor and research associate are different positions, but HIAS Committee will decide which position you will be appointed to.
- Regarding the description of ‘non-tenure / five years fixed’, is this only applied to the Research Associate? Or Assistant Professor is also non-tenure / five years fixed?
Both Assistant Professor and Research Associate are non-tenure / five years fixed positions.
Qualifications
- I have two master’s degrees, but I do not have a PhD. Am I eligble to apply to this position？
It depends on the academic field you are applying for. Please refer to the job descriptions for each
fields.- In the application guidelines, there is a description of “young researchers”. Is it literally mean young people? Or do you include a researcher who has recently obtained a PhD eligible regardless of age?
We do not restrict applications by age. The definition of being a “young researcher” is assumed by the duration after obtaining a doctorate. “
- Is this position requires Japanese language skill?
The ability to communicate in Japanese is preferable but is not essential.
Application Documents
- Should the application be written in Japanese or English?
Please submit all application documents in English or Japanese. There is no effect on the screening
whether the submission is in Japanese or English.- Should the ‘major papers’ be published paper? Is it acceptable to submit an unpublished article (in press)?
Whether it is published or not is not a prerequisite for application documents. Unpublished papers
are also acceptable.- Can I include unpublished papers (in press) in the Designated Application Form?
There is no problem to include in-press papers as your research achievements as long as they fall
under the respective categories and are clearly labelled as “in-press”.- Regarding the ‘Designated Application Form’, how much do I be expected to fill in?
There are no specific regulations regarding the volume of the form, and it is up to you.
- I think I complete my application from the registration form, but I don’t receive an acknowledgement email. Have I successfully applied?
We can check your application status if you send an inquiry to hias-info@ad.hit-u.ac.jp. Basically, if you do not receive an automatic confirmation email, the application might not be successfully received by the system. In that case, we ask you to try to apply from the registration form again.
- Do you have any designated form for each required documents?
We only have a ‘Designated Application Form’, and we do not have designated forms for the other documents.
Reference Letters
- Should the reference letter be written in Japanese or English?
There is no effect on the screening whether the submission is in Japanese or English.
- Do I need to ask my reference to submit the reference letter by the deadline of the application?
The application deadline in the application guidelines is the deadline for applicants to apply. Your reference will receive a separate request from us, and the deadline for submission will be described there. In case you apply for our position at the last minute, will be slightly shortened. So please be sure to request your references to prepare a reference letter in advance.
- I have been asked to write reference letters by several applicants. I tried to submit a second letter after submitting the first letter from the registration form, but I was unable to submit and the error message says “You have already registered.” How can I submit the second letter?
We are genuinely sorry, but due to the systematic restriction of the registration form, it is unable to submit plural entry from the same email address. Could you try the following either way? a) register a different email address of yours, b) send the second letter to hias-info@ad.hit-u.ac.jp by email.
- When will HIAS send a reference letter request to the references and when will be the due day?
Basically, we send reference letter requests to the references 1-2 business days after we receive your application. The deadline for reference letter submission is about one week. Please kindly be noted that if you submit the documents at the last minute, the deadline for reference letter submission will be slightly shortened.
- I was asked to write a reference letter, but I am not currently employed at a university. Also, I have no academic relationship with the applicant and do not fully understand the applicant’s research content. Can I still be eligible to write a reference letter for the applicant?
There is no problem with the status or academic relationship to submitting the reference letters as long as the applicant would like to as you to write it.
- In the email address field of references, may I register that of a university’s administrative staff who handles reference letters?
Yes, you can register the administrative staff email address, as far as the reference letter itself is written by your reference.
Interview
- Can I choose whether the interview/job seminar/moc lesson will be conducted in either Japanese or English?
Yes, you can choose your preferable language from Japanese or English.
